A Common Question
Study Abroad Without IELTS
Yes — many Indian students study abroad without ever sitting IELTS. Here is an honest look at how it works, where it is easiest, and the one thing you should not skip.
IELTS is one way to prove your English — but it is not the only way, and for many programmes it is not required at all. If cost, timing or the exam itself is a worry, you have genuine options.
Below are the four routes we most often use to help students qualify without IELTS. Which one applies depends on your school, your chosen country and the specific university.
Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) certificate
If your Class 11-12 or degree was taught in English, many universities accept a simple MOI letter from your school or college instead of IELTS.
The university's own English test
A number of universities run their own online English assessment or waive the requirement for strong applicants — no IELTS booking or fee needed.
A short interview
Some programmes simply hold a brief spoken interview to check you can follow lectures comfortably.
Countries that often do not require it
In Russia, many English-medium programmes — including medicine and engineering — do not ask for IELTS at all. Some universities in Germany and Finland also accept alternatives.
The one thing not to skip
Skipping IELTS does not mean skipping English. Your entire degree will be taught and examined in English, so genuine command of the language matters far more than a certificate. We will tell you honestly whether your English is ready — and help you prepare if it is not. Better to be honest now than to struggle later.
